Mountain Strong Training
Hey friends! I wanted to share with y’all some workouts that have worked well for myself to stay in shape for hunting season. As a hunting guide and avid hunter, being strong is a necessity for my career and lifestyle. Perhaps you’re in a slump, or need some new workout ideas, here are a few of my favorites that will burn a ton of calories and build up your endurance and strength.
I am no licensed coach, or trainer. These workouts simply worked wonders for me and perhaps they will for you too.
20 mins work, 10 seconds rest x6-8 rounds.
-Weighted squat press
-Jump squats
-Weighted lunge. (If you want to add in strength, add a bicep curl to your lunge or hold them above your head)
-Burpees
-Russian twist
-High knees to plank. (I like to do 10 high knees, drop to a plank, and hold for a couple seconds and then back up.) This jacks your heart rate up and forces you to focus on breathing, just like sometimes you have too when a bull is suddenly on top of you and coming in hot!!
STRETCH
20 mins work, 10 second rest x6-8 rounds
-Single leg deadlift
-Deadlift
-Mountain climbers
-Hip dips in plank.
-Burpees
-Arnold press
STRETCH
Weighted Hike.
Get off trail. Wear your hunting boots and bino harness like you would in the field.
-3 miles 20 lbs. twice a week
-3 miles 30 lbs. twice a week
-4.5 miles 20 lbs. twice a week
-3.5 miles 40 lbs. twice a week
-You get the point, as you progress you can add more weight. The more weight you add the less miles you want to do. I like to max out at 50 lbs. for 3 miles. Find your preference. I have found that being able to do 40 lbs. at 3.5 miles steadily is a great way to gage my strength for September!
STRETCH
Sled Pulls.
-Find a weight that isn’t too daunting for your first round, you can always add more weight. Get creative, use water jugs, firewood, dumbbells, rocks, you name it. Throw into a sled and pull forward, for 7 x 100 yards. Don’t forget to walk backwards and pull it too. I like to do every other.
-Run 2 miles
STRETCH
Mobility Day.
-Take some time to stretch and roll out.
After I’m feeling loose and warm, I like to add in core/back training.
-2x15 knee to elbows. In plank bring your knee to your elbow and back for one round. You can even cross your knee to opposite elbow for a side crunch.
-2x15 Push ups
-2x20 weighted bridge
-2x30 squats
-2x20 side plank crunch

SPRINTS!
I’m not going to lie; I love doing sprints! Grab your headphones and go for a mile run to warm up.
-10 x 50 yards. They help big time with building up endurance for hunting season! Those elk are fast on their hooves! Will you be able to keep up?

Turkey season is nearly upon us here in Colorado, and I look forwarding to guiding a few hunts this year, and hopefully get out on some hunts for myself. I have yet to notch a turkey tag.
There are still 5 spots available for the women’s big game 101 clinic I am hosting June 9th-12th. Below is a quick run-down of what we will be focusing on.
-Navigation 101. Learning how to read maps, how to e-scout, meaning how to find habitat that wild game thrives on. How to look for water, trails, migrations routes, etc.
-Glassing 101. Learning when and where to look for animals, depending on which season you are hunting. I have found that spending more time behind my binoculars and spotting scope has brought me more opportunities when hunting, vs going in blind.
-Hike. Let’s go get our boots on the ground and walk-through wild game habitat. Well set trail cameras, make waypoints on our maps, pump water to drink, locate bedding grounds, rubs, wallows, etc.
-Scavenger hunt! Teaming up you’ll be put the test to apply what you had learned so far. There will be some great prizes for the winners!
-CONNECT with mountain women and mother earth, LEARN & GROW among mountain women. You never know who you’ll meet at these events. I personally have gained some great friends from previous events, and I hope you too, can join us and build up the community, of fierce mountain women.
-GIVEAWAYS!
